“Carmérère leads this blend with its smoky, leafy scent, and driving acidity. It adds complexity to the Cabernet (50%) and Merlot (25%), with spicy, smoky dark cherry flavors, while its granular texture and leafy tannins add grip.”

"Yakima Valley winemaker Robert Smasne continues to show his skill with Carménère in this blend of Bordeaux varieties that leads with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Merlot (25%). The herbal notes that appeal to many fans of Cabernet Franc and Carm leap out of the glass with hints of oregano and green peppercorns, but there’s a rush of supporting aromas akin to blackberry jam, dried cherry, vanilla and shaved dark chocolate. On the palate, the herbaceousness gets pushed well into the background as the focus is on sweet barrel tones with ripe black currant, Van cherry and raspberry flavors. The structure is rich, bold, beautiful and easy to enjoy with lingering food-friendly acidity. Serve with short ribs, London broil or meatloaf."

“High-toned scents of violet and tree-bark open up to a surprisingly fruit-forward carmenere, the Bordelaise variety that reemerged in Chile and now, along with Malbec, has begun a migration to the Pacific Northwest. Its plum flavors have a smoky tinge, as if dusted in ash; a thrust of purple for barbeque.”

Kirkland vintner Bob Delf continues to offer one of the Northwest’s best examples of this still-obscure Bordeaux variety. Classic and alluring aromas of green peppercorns, oregano and green olive meld with fruity notes of black plum, currant and cherry, along with clove, toasted oak and blackstrap molasses. There’s no disappointment on the palate where there’s smoky richness, succulence with cassis on the midpalate, and beautiful balance that carries into a tremendous farewell of Montmorency cherry. Everything is in place.

Kirkland vintner Bob Delf continues to focus this blend on Syrah (60%), but there also are significant contributions from Carménère and Petit Verdot, which help to make this a rather complex offering. Aromas of boysenberry, chocolate-covered blueberry include pinches of anise, horehound and green peppercorns along with leather. The drink is full and rich from start to finish with sweet black cherry and vanilla flavors and well-managed chocolaty tannins. These wines are available at their shared tasting room in Spokane at Nectar as well as Totem Square in Kirkland.

Syrah often is the secret sauce behind many of the Pacific Northwest’s top proprietary red blends, and the winemaking tandem of Robert Delf and Robert Smasne make it the lead grape (60%) in this blend from Spofford Station, Tasawik and Verhey vineyards. That Rhône red allows for aromas of Marionberry syrup, cola, toast and white pepper with a hint of game. Inside, there’s more Marionberry, backed by black currant and blueberry. Sandy tannins, pomegranate acidity, tobacco and dark chocolate combine for a rewarding finish.

Robert Delf’s Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Merlot (35%), Malbec (10%), Petit Verdot (10%) and Carménère carries aromas of sweet toast, Chukar Cherry, strawberry candy and rosemary that are mirrored in the mouth, backed by nicely managed tannins, blueberry acidity and a finish of cherry cola with vanilla.

Wine Press NW Award, December 2016

Versatile winemaker Robert Smasne obtained grapes from Tasawik, Spofford Station, Double Canyon and Coyote Canyon vineyards, then combined them into a blend of Malbec (25%), Merlot (20%), Petit Verdot (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%), Syrah (15%) and Carménère and aged it for 21 months in 50% new French oak. The result is a wine with a bit of leather in its nose, then a hint of blueberry, fulsome, grapy flavors and with its tannins well in check. (474 cases, 13.9% alc.)

Great Northwest Wine, April 2016

While its price remains stable, the blending program for Robert Delf’s Intrigue is rather fluid each year. This time, the Kirkland, Wash., vintner and winemaker Robert Smasne focused on Bordeaux varieties – Malbec (25%), Merlot (20%), Petit Verdot (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Carménère (5%) with Syrah as a backblender (15%). Their results are bodacious, starting with a nose that might make you go cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs cereal, joined by black plum, lavender, rosemary and a pinch of black pepper. There’s elegance to the mouth feel and flavors of cassis and plums as juicy acidity and beautiful grip to the tannins funnel into a finish of anise with more pepper and chocolate.
